During a residency in Brussels, Rui Calçada Bastos frequently visited the flea market at Place Jeu de Balle. The work, photographs and a video, is about its bric-a-brac and debris. Pictures of leftovers – a broken glass, a report on economics or a bloodstained handkerchief – are shown as the spoils of this place, par terre. Additionally, a video captures local ragpickers and their motions amid the “capharnaum of waste.” Rui Calçada Bastos follows the footsteps of his previous exhibition, titled If you’re going through, hell keep going, towards an art engaged with the world and its current state of crisis.
